RESOURCE: Mr. Ferris and His Wheel by Kathryn Davis ----------------------------------------- In today’s video I discussed inventions. Mr. Eiffel created the Eiffel tower in Paris and Americans wanted to create something better. This is the story of that amazing, colossal, steam-powered, moving, lighted, ride of steel from 1893 in Chicago. 6th graders from PSS will recall the invention of the sewer system in Paris that was also developed in the 1800’s. Below are some activities you might be interested in pursuing. Use your research skills and see what you can find out about these related topics.

Today I talked about how books and movies are often based on real life events. It can be comforting, relaxing, and enjoyable to have someone read to you. That is why I’ve chosen an award-winning story of an endearing teddy bear for you to enjoy this week. It’s about family heritage and passing stories down from one generation to the next.

Read the following sentences and decide if they are a flashback or if they are foreshadowing: 1. The day was bright and beautiful and he had a feeling it was going to be the most exciting day of his life. 2. When she went to bed that night her dreams were of her former life in the big city. 3. He reminisced about the good times when he and his best friend would play for hours in the woods. 4. Singing this joyful song would be the last happy thing May Belle would do for a very long time. 5. The strong smell of maple syrup reminded Jess of that terrible morning. 6. He remembered the glorious day last year when he had won his one and only race. 7. Even though the forecast was for clear weather, heavy rain started to fall. She hoped the creek wouldn’t flood too much. 8. Brenda couldn’t remember ever being so hungry. She couldn’t wait to get home to eat dinner and wondered whose turn it was to cook. 9. Leslie may have been racing forward, but her memories were racing backwards to the last time she was in this situation. 10. Three tragic events happened this week. Things will surely change now...or so he thought. 11. Little did Jess know the new neighbor he just spied was going to make such a difference in his life. 12. What had happened to Brenda reminded her mother of a childhood event when she had been the most popular girl in school. 13. The story brought to mind one he had heard last year from his favorite teacher. 14. Miss Edmunds was wearing a light cotton dress and sandals. Soon she would want to have a warm jacket and some heavy socks. 15. Janice was tired, hurt, and hungry, and she started to recollect the few happy times in her life. 16. Mr. Burke placed the home repair book back on the shelf. Later he would wish he had read it from cover to cover. 17. Ellie asked, “What if you get lost? What if you can't find your way back? ARe you sure you know the way?” 2. Have you read a book or watched a movie or show with a flashback? Can you describe the flashback?
